How we built this calculator.

Methodology, sources, and assumptions.
Public reporting from artist payout statements (2023-2025) and aggregated data from Soundcharts, Loudwire, and Music Business Worldwide. Spotify does not publish an official rate, actual payout depends on listener geography (Tier 1 markets pay more), subscription tier (premium > free), and your share of the royalty pool that month.

The data behind this calculator: Spotify royalty reference

Last updated:

As of August 2026, Spotify pays master rights holders an average of $0.003 to $0.005 per stream, with US streams near $0.004. Spotify paid $11 billion in total royalties for 2025 per its own Loud and Clear report, and 1 million streams generated over $11,000 on average. The reference numbers behind the calculator are below.

The three royalty pipelines a Spotify stream feeds. Most independent artists collect only the first.
Royalty pipelineRate per streamWho collects it
Recording (master)$0.003 to $0.005Your distributor pays it to the master rights holder. This is what this calculator models.
Mechanical (publishing)about $0.00091 in the USA publishing administrator (for example Songtrust). Not collected automatically.
Performance (publishing)$0.0003 to $0.0006Your PRO (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and equivalents). Requires registration.

Methodology

Streaming platforms pool each month's subscription and ad revenue per market, keep roughly 30 percent, and divide the rest across rights holders by stream share. Spotify calls this streamshare. Your payout equals your streams divided by total platform streams, times the market's revenue pool, times the rights-holder share. Per-stream rates are always derived afterward, never quoted up front, which is why every published rate is a range. Two Spotify-specific rules shape the output: Tracks must reach at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months (plus a minimum unique-listener count) to be included in Spotify's recorded-music royalty pool. Rolling 12-month window, recalculated monthly, in effect since April 2024. And free-tier streams pay several times less than premium-tier streams, so listener mix moves the effective rate as much as volume does. Official 2025 context from Spotify's Loud and Clear report: $11 billion paid in 2025, $70 billion lifetime, 13,800+ artists earning $100,000 or more, and roughly half of royalties going to independent artists and labels for the second year running.

Worked examples

An independent artist with 250,000 Spotify streams in a month, collecting master royalties only.

250,000 streams at $0.003 to $0.005 equals $750 to $1,250 from the master pipeline. Uncollected publishing (mechanical plus performance) leaves roughly another $300 to $390 on the table without a publishing admin and PRO registration.

1 million streams across a year, per Spotify's own 2025 average.

Spotify's Loud and Clear report says 1 million streams generated over $11,000 on average in 2025. That average covers all rights holders and royalty pipelines combined and skews toward premium tier-1 listening, which is why it sits above the $3,000 to $5,000 the master-side range alone implies.

A catalog of 10 tracks where each track earned under 1,000 streams in 12 months.

Every track sits below the monetization threshold, so recorded-music royalties are $0 regardless of total catalog volume until individual tracks cross 1,000 streams in the rolling window.

Per-stream ranges are market-consensus estimates (no platform publishes an official rate); Spotify facts are from Spotify's own Loud and Clear report (2025 royalty data) and its track-monetization support page, both checked directly on the date stamped above. Mechanical and performance rates per US statutory and PRO reporting.
