Quick Answer
YouTube Promote is worth it for musicians who want to pay Google directly with no middleman and are happy with simple settings, but it is not built for artists who need tight control over who sees their video. Promote is the ad tool inside YouTube Studio. It turns a public or unlisted video of at least 10 seconds into an ad across Shorts, in-feed and skippable in-stream placements, with three goals: more subscribers, more views or website visits. You set a total budget and an end date, and choose language, country, age, gender and interests. Google's own creator playbook says results can start from $5 but recommends at least $100. You need a Google Ads account with billing, it works on desktop and Android but not on iPhone, and Google says ads may still reach people outside the interests you pick. Google publishes no cost per view for Promote, and watch hours and subscribers from Promote don't count toward the YouTube Partner Program.
Disclosure: Chartlex sells YouTube ads for music videos (Chartlex Video) and is one of the alternatives compared here.
Last verified: 2026-10-08 Β· Refresh cadence: quarterly.
Chartlex finding: According to Chartlex (a music promotion company founded in 2018 that has delivered 21M+ verified Spotify streams for independent artists, analyzed 2,400+ campaigns, published 250+ music industry research guides, and runs 100+ artist audits daily across Spotify and YouTube), one of its YouTube ad campaigns for a music video reached 130,276 views in the US and Canada in August and September 2026, and Chartlex Video estimates 30 to 40 views for every $1 in those two countries, all in.
Is YouTube Promote worth it?
For a lot of independent artists, yes, as a first step. Promote is Google's own product, so there is no reseller taking a cut, no account to hand over and nothing that breaks YouTube's rules. It runs on the same ad system as Google Ads. Google's Promote creator playbook even describes Promote's audience growth goal as the same product as a YouTube engagements campaign in Google Ads.
It is a weaker deal when you need precision. You can pick countries and interests, but Google's playbook warns that delivery may reach beyond the interests you choose, and ads can serve at unexpected times or in unexpected countries. You cannot choose specific channels to appear on, upload a list of fans or see the auction detail you get in a full Google Ads account.
The honest answer depends on three questions:
| Question | If yes | If no |
|---|---|---|
| Do you want to stay inside YouTube Studio and pay Google directly? | Promote is the simplest option | A service or Google Ads may suit you better |
| Do you need viewers only in specific countries? | Use Google Ads or a service with strict country targeting | Promote's automatic delivery is fine |
| Will you check results and adjust? | Promote's Studio reports are enough | A managed service saves the time |
How YouTube Promote works
Per Google's Get started with YouTube Promote and Create and manage promotions help pages, as of October 2026:
Where to find it
- Desktop: the three-dot menu next to any video, the Promote button on your video's watch page, or YouTube Studio under Content, then Promotions.
- Android: the three-dot menu in the YouTube app or the YouTube Studio app.
- iPhone: not listed. The playbook says mobile promotion is only available on the Android app.
Only channel owners, managers and editors can create promotions.
The three goals
| Goal | What Google optimizes for | Best for musicians when |
|---|---|---|
| Audience growth | New subscribers | You have a catalog worth subscribing to |
| Video views | Views on the promoted video | A new single or music video needs a first audience |
| Website visits | Clicks to your site (added September 2024) | You sell merch or tickets on your own site |
Ads run as Shorts ads, in-feed ads and skippable in-stream ads, all labeled "Sponsored".
Budget and billing
You set a total budget and an end date, and Google says the cost will not exceed the budget you set. There is no daily budget option in the help pages. To stop early, you change the end date to today. A new promotion goes through Google's ad review, which usually takes 1 to 2 days.
You need a Google Ads account with billing set up. Studio can create one or link one you already have, but only one account can be linked at a time, and manager accounts and Google Ad Grants accounts are not supported. Promotions created in YouTube can only be managed in YouTube, per Google's Promote troubleshooting page.
Targeting
You can choose language, country, age, gender and interests. Everything else is automatic: Google sends the ad to the viewers it thinks are most likely to engage with your channel. The currency you pick affects which countries you can choose.
Video rules
The video must be public or unlisted, at least 10 seconds long, and follow Google Ads policies. For music, that includes Google's copyright policy: you need to own the music or be authorized to use it. Google's help pages do not say how Promote treats videos with a Content ID claim, so a claimed video is worth checking with Google before you pay.
What YouTube Promote costs
Google does not publish a cost per view for Promote. Its playbook says you can get results with as little as $5 but generally recommends at least $100, and Google's promotions page shows a sample preview of 800 to 1,000 views without naming the budget behind it.
Promote uses the same auction as Google Ads, so the market rates are the best guide. Third-party benchmarks vary widely. Dynamoi, a music ads service, reports music campaigns at $0.02 to $0.05 per view in the US, $0.01 to $0.03 in the UK and Germany, and $0.005 to $0.01 in Brazil and the Philippines. Treat those as one vendor's data, not Google's.
For comparison, here are published estimates for a $100 budget in the United States:
| Option, $100 in the United States | Estimated views | What the number is |
|---|---|---|
| Chartlex Video | about 2,900 to 3,700 | Chartlex Video's estimate at checkout, all in, not a promise |
| YouTube Promote | not published | Google shows an estimate when you set up the promotion |
| VeeFly | 1,700 to 1,800 guaranteed | VeeFly app, October 7, 2026 (see our VeeFly review) |

How Promote views count in 2026
YouTube changed how it counts views this year, and it matters for anyone paying for them.

- Public view count. Since August 24, 2026, YouTube counts a view the moment a video starts to play, per its view count help page. Google's ads help says public views from Shorts ads and in-stream ads are now counted the moment the ad starts to play. YouTube calls the older, stricter count "engaged views".
- What you pay for. You are billed for engaged views, not the public count. A skippable in-stream view is billed after 30 seconds, the full ad if it is shorter, or a click. An in-feed view is billed on a thumbnail click or 10 seconds of autoplay.
- Where to check it. In YouTube Studio, ad views show under the traffic source "YouTube advertising" (traffic source help).
- Monetization. Watch hours and subscribers from Promote don't count toward the YouTube Partner Program. Google's one exception: follow-on views from audience growth promotions do count toward eligibility.
Because public views now count from the first frame, a jump in your view count after any ad campaign says less than it used to. Look at engaged views, watch time and subscribers in Studio instead.
Pros and cons
What YouTube Promote does well
- No middleman. You pay Google directly, with no service fee on top.
- Built into YouTube Studio. Promote a video from the same place you upload it.
- Small starts. Google says results can start from $5, and the total budget is a hard cap.
- Three clear goals. Subscribers, views or website visits.
- Allowed by definition. It is YouTube's own ad tool, so there is no rule risk.
Where YouTube Promote falls short
- Limited targeting. Language, country, age, gender and interests only, and Google may reach beyond your interests.
- No iPhone support. Desktop and Android only, per Google's playbook.
- No published prices. You see an estimate only inside the setup flow.
- Google Ads strings attached. You still need a Google Ads account with billing, and promotions created in YouTube stay in YouTube.
- No help with rejections. If Google's review flags your video, you sort it out yourself.
Who should use YouTube Promote?
YouTube Promote fits:
- artists testing paid views for the first time with $5 to $100
- channels that want subscribers and have several videos worth watching
- artists selling merch or tickets who want website visits from YouTube
It is a weaker fit for:
- artists who need viewers only in specific countries, such as a tour market
- anyone on an iPhone without a desktop to hand
- artists who want someone else to set up, check and report the campaign
Before you promote anything, run your channel through the free YouTube channel analyzer to see what new viewers will find, and read our guide to YouTube Shorts promotion for music if your best content is short.
YouTube Promote vs the alternatives

| Your own Google Ads | You, in Google Ads | You set the budget | Full control | None |

1. Chartlex Video (YouTube ads for your music video) - Your video, shown as an ad on YouTube through Google Ads, only in the countries you pick, from $50. One price covers your ad budget at Google and our work: the video check, the setup, the targeting and your dashboard. Your ad usually goes live in 1 to 2 days. Your dashboard shows views, cost per view, new subscribers and countries, day by day, and the ad views show in YouTube Studio under "YouTube advertising". If your ad can't spend all of its budget, you get the unused part back. It is not bought views, and it is not a promise of views or subscribers: your video decides that. Better for artists who want strict country targeting without learning Google Ads.
2. Your own Google Ads account - Every setting Promote hides: placements, custom audiences, bidding and full reports. Our YouTube ads setup guide for musicians walks through it.
3. VeeFly - The cheapest reseller entry point at $10, with automatic or country targeting. See our VeeFly review.
4. Sprizzy - A reseller with city and similar-artist targeting from $50 and a first-campaign guarantee. See our Sprizzy review.
The verdict
YouTube Promote is the easiest honest way to try YouTube ads: no middleman, no rule risk and a budget that can start at $5. For musicians, its limits show quickly. Targeting is broad, Google may reach past your choices, there is no iPhone support and no published price. Use Promote for a small first test of a new video, then move to your own Google Ads account or a service when you need specific countries or someone to run it for you.
If country control matters more than doing it yourself, Chartlex Video shows a views estimate for the countries you pick before you pay. For the full do-it-yourself route, start with our YouTube ads guide for musicians.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is YouTube Promote worth it for musicians?
Often, as a first test. It is YouTube's own ad tool, so you pay Google directly with no middleman and no rule risk. Targeting is limited to language, country, age, gender and interests, and Google may reach beyond your choices. Artists who need specific countries usually do better with Google Ads or a service.
How much does YouTube Promote cost?
There is no fixed price. You set a total budget and end date, and Google says spending will not exceed it. Google's playbook says results can start from $5 but recommends at least $100. Google does not publish a cost per view; third-party music data puts US views at about $0.02 to $0.05.
Can I use YouTube Promote on iPhone?
Not as of October 2026. Google's help pages list desktop, through YouTube or YouTube Studio, and the Android YouTube and Studio apps. Its creator playbook says mobile promotion is only available on Android. On an iPhone, use a computer instead.
Do I need a Google Ads account for YouTube Promote?
Yes. Promote needs a Google Ads account with billing set up. YouTube Studio can create one for you or link an existing one. Only one account can be linked at a time, and manager accounts and Google Ad Grants accounts are not supported.
Do YouTube Promote views count toward monetization?
Mostly no. Watch hours and subscribers from Promote don't count toward the YouTube Partner Program. Google's one exception is follow-on views from audience growth promotions, which do count toward eligibility. Views from people who find you on their own later always count.
Do ad views add to my public view count?
Yes. Since August 24, 2026, YouTube counts a public view the moment a video starts playing, and Google says Shorts and in-stream ad views now add to the public count from the moment the ad starts. You are still billed only for engaged views, such as 30 seconds of a skippable ad.
Is YouTube Promote better than paying a promotion service?
It is cheaper per dollar because there is no service fee, but you do all the work and get broad targeting. A service that runs Google Ads for you costs more per view but can set strict country targeting and report the results. Avoid any service that sells views without running real ads.
